Proper Wine Storage and Why It’s Important
from:Although many people today drink wine on a regular basis, very few of them understand the importance of proper wine storage. It is incredibly important, as it affects the taste of the wine its aromas and flavor when you come to drink it
Storing wine properly is also critical because, it is perishable, just like food, and so if you have very expensive bottles of wine, you are going to want to take especially good care of them and make them last.
The Basics of Wine Storage
One of the first and most important things that everyone should know when it comes to wine storage, is that wine needs to be stored in a damp, dark place. The best conditions for storing wine include a humidity of about 80% and stable temperatures of around 55°F.
The reason for needing cool and steady low temperatures is because a cool temperature slows the aging process of the wine. So if you are keeping your wine in higher temperatures the again process will be faster. It is therefore preferable that your wine storage is either in cellar or a wine refrigerator.
You can use your basement if you don’t have a special refrigerator or cellar, but make sure that there is no vibration and that it is constantly dark. If you don’t have either a basement or a wine refrigerator then try to store you wine in an air conditioned closet.
Bottles Should Be On Their Side
All wine bottles should be kept on their side. The reason for this is that the cork needs to be kept wet in order to fill the space at the neck of the bottle. If the cork is not in contact with the wine and dries out, it will allow oxygen into the bottle. Oxygen if it gets into the bottle will without doubt spoil your wine.
So a cork needs to be kept moist and by storing wine bottles on their side, this will kept the cork moist by constantly being in contact with the wine. If you are storing your wine for very long periods of time, you will also need to consider a humidity controlled environment in order to keep the cork from shrinking or drying out.
Proper wine storage is critical, regardless of how many bottles of wine you have or how expensive they are. Wine storage is an important detail that you should take seriously, which will help enhance the overall experience of any bottle of wine.
