Your Guide to Merlot
from:In south western France you find the Bordeaux region which produces many famous brands of world famous Merlot. Approximately 50% more land is devoted to vineyards in Bordeaux than any other area in France. For centuries now this area has long been one of the top producing and consistent wine regions of the world.
Merlot from the Pomerol Area on the Bank of the Garonne River
There are more than 70 million cases of Merlot produced in Pomerol each year. This is not as difficult of a task as it sounds, considering that there are more than 22 thousand vineyards in Bordeaux, which cover approximately 280 thousand acres of land or 13 acres of land per vineyard. All of these different vineyards produce great wine. Many vineyards produce and sell their own wine, but it is not unusual for a vineyard to sell wine through a local cooperative which operate in the region.
Wines in this area can date back as far as 1855, and the recipes or blend has not altered very much over the years. In this area, you will find about 60 different wine appellations or labels that range from fair to world class and everything in between. You will also find that this wine is actually very affordable.
Merlot is now the most important red grape that is grown in the Bordeaux region, and the second most important is Cabernet Sauvignon. Of course, there are also some other notable Bordeaux red grape varieties that are found in this region but they are not nearly as popular as Merlot. In this area, there are also to be found some major white grapes, these include Sauvignon Blanc and Semillion. In actual fact the Pomerol region of Bordeaux is a small, rural area that primarily produces the red wine for which it is so well known.
Tourism in Pomerol
Pomerols main tourist attractions, apart from its wonderful wines, are the wine chateaux. Although, the world famous Chateau Petrus is not all that special to look at. In fact, many of the chateaux are far from spectacular, and do not have the grace and charm of many Chateaux of the Loire region.
Once you taste the Merlot from the Pomerol region of France, you will definitely want to enjoy it again and again. The flavor is full and fruity at the same time, and may best be enjoyed as an accompaniment to a main course meat dish. You may even find that you want to try its noble cousin, Chateau Petrus. Merlot is a wine that is enjoyed worldwide by many wine drinkers, and one sip will tell you why it is such a popular wine of choice.
